Until a little over three years ago I would never have envisioned I'd be doing the endurance races I do now. I was a relative couch potato who had staved off poor health and weight gain primarily due to youth and lucky genetics. A friend invited me to come spectate/sherpa Racine 70.3. I joined not knowing what Ironman even was. When they filled me in on the road trip to Racine I was blown away. I didn't even know endurance events like this existed or were even possible. Spectating the race was more fun than I would have ever imagined. The finish line experience was so captivating that I knew immediately that I wanted to experience it from the athlete’s perspective. But I was scared and didn’t own any equipment. I started out running and ran my first half marathon that fall and my first marathon in the spring. It was then that I felt ready to face my fear sign up for a triathlon. I signed up for Wisconsin 70.3 before I even owned a bike. Plus I hadn’t swam in over 15 years. Despite my lack of experience I completed my first triathlon in 2018 at Wisconsin 70.3. Without my friend’s help and support that never would have been possible. I was hooked and raced Boulder 70.3 this last year and am now working up the guts to sign up for a full Ironman. In a span of three years triathlon has gone from something I knew nothing about to something I can’t go an hour without thinking about. It has allowed me the opportunity to show myself and others what I am capable of if I put my mind to something and I can't imagine my life without it.
